On the back of what has been reportedly record business for much of the heavy vehicle industry over the last year or more, it is hard to paint 2023 as being something extraordinary – but it is.
Not only is it a Brisbane Truck Show year, and a very special one that will bring our disparate mob from all corners back together, after a challenging but memorable truck show in 2021; it will also be a major landmark event, as it showcases the proliferation of electromobility and other sustainable transport solutions emerging.
Of course, as an industry we are still wrestling with plenty of other challenges, and opportunities too.
There is the fallout and ongoing issues from the international supply chain crisis; no matter how good your retention rate is, there are skills shortages; there is rising inflation and uncertainty about how that will affect forward orders, let alone orders that are already in the book.
We’ve seen the devastating impact with transport and logistics operations large and small falling victim.
There are also many big issues on the table from a policy and regulatory perspective. The heavy vehicle national law is on the table, PBS is going through its biggest-ever reform, our technology providers are wrestling with the imminent closure of the 3G network, and our truck manufacturers are advocating for more width and steer axle mass to enable and accelerate the shift to lower and zero emissions.
That’s not the half of it, but if you want to get the full picture and understand the implications for your organisation you need to join us at the HVIA State Committee meeting near you; they are taking place around the country over the next few weeks.
Don’t forget that anyone from member organisations, who will benefit from knowledge-sharing and networking, is welcome to attend. Participation is also a great way of making a contribution back to our great industry.
