HVIA Maps Out Way Forward For Powered Trailers

HVIA has followed up the inaugural meeting of its Powered Trailer Working Group in late June by meeting with representatives from key regulators on August 1 to progress its powered trailer strategy.

While there was some discussion of trailers which use regenerative braking to power auxiliary equipment, the primary objective for the meeting was to discuss trailers fitted with motive power axles. These are defined as trailers which use an onboard power source to drive one or more of the trailers axles and may include regenerative braking capacity.

As a result of the meeting HVIA has identified two key strategies which aim to identify the key regulatory changes that are required to support the use of powered trailers in the longer term; and develop a framework for on-road trials of powered trailers.

HVIA is seeking to have these strategies ratified at the upcoming meeting of the Vehicle Standards Consultative Forum (VSCF) in early September. The VSCF is the main forum for discussions between industry and government on vehicle standards.

HVIA will provide more detail on the meeting and on the proposed strategies to the HVIA Powered Trailer Working Group.

Once the strategies are endorsed by the VSCF, HVIA will provide more detail on the strategies to the broader membership.
