In Melbourne for the Transport Infrastructure Council (TIC) meeting of Commonwealth, state and territory transport ministers, Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz joined HVIA's Todd Hacking to tour Iveco's manufacturing plant and test drive the mirrorless Actros during a tour of the Daimler Trucks HQ.

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) and Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia (HVIA) have today welcomed the establishment of a new Parliamentary Friends forum that will allow federal MPs and Senators to work more closely with the road transport and heavy vehicle industries.

The heavy vehicle industry is divided over Austroads recommendations to increase the maximum allowable heavy freight vehicle width from 2500 mm to 2550 mm (including attachments). Austroads, the peak organisation of Australasian road transport and traffic agencies, was tasked by the Federal Government to look at the productivity and safety implications of expanding heavy vehicle width.

HVIA is calling for changes to the Rules that sit under the Road Vehicles Standards Act (RVSA) to protect against massive cost implications for industry. HVIA's National Policy and Government Relations Manager Greg Forbes says that a lack of understanding of the heavy vehicle industry has led to some overly restrictive drafting of the Rules.

The Queensland heavy vehicle industry is in mourning with the sad news that former Board Director, Derek Marriott passed away on Friday last week, aged 60 years. Derek was the Service Manager at Cummins South Pacific in Brisbane for twenty-five years before taking up the Service Managers role at Daimler Trucks Brisbane. More recently, Derek was the Service Manager at Iveco Trucks Brisbane prior to retiring from the industry.
