South Metropolitan TAFE recently hosted a valuable workshop in collaboration with HVIA and key industry stakeholders to shine a spotlight on the challenges facing the automotive manufacturing (AUM) sector in Western Australia.
The event – marking the first of many planned engagements – brought together 14 respected leaders from across the heavy vehicle and manufacturing industries. Together, they explored a range of pressing issues impacting the sector, including:
- A lack of recognition for what is being manufactured within the AUM industry;
- Misunderstanding around the type of work undertaken by manufacturers;
- Limited acknowledgment of the sector’s contribution to the broader economy;
- Ambiguity around what can be approved under VSB6 regulations; and
- The importance and implications of industry terminology and naming conventions.
While the list isn’t exhaustive, it highlights the stark contrast in support and funding compared to other trades. One notable example is the Western Australian Government’s ‘Lower Fees, Local Skills’ initiative – an excellent program that unfortunately does not yet include automotive manufacturing.
What stood out most during the session was the deep pride and passion shared by everyone in the room. These professionals care deeply about their work, their products and the future of their industry. They want to see the next generation have real pathways into meaningful careers in AUM.
With continued collaboration between our members, South Metro TAFE, industry stakeholders and RITC, HVIA is committed to advocating for automotive manufacturing to be added to the ‘Lower Fees, Local Skills’ course list in 2025.
As one stakeholder noted, “Right, you have our attention and support – now get it done.”
Challenge accepted.
