First Hydrogen Vehicle Training Launches

Australia has taken a major step toward a cleaner, more innovative transport future with the launch of the nation’s first accredited hydrogen vehicle training program.

Delivered at Kangan Institute’s state-of-the-art Automotive Centre of Excellence, this pioneering course equips automotive technicians with the skills to safely service and maintain hydrogen fuel cell electric heavy vehicles. The initiative is the result of a powerful collaboration between Kangan Institute and Foton Mobility Distribution, supported by the Victorian Government’s Skills Solutions Partnerships program.

Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are redefining clean transport. Producing only water vapour emissions, they present a sustainable alternative for Australia’s freight and passenger sectors. With Victoria already leading the nation in hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, this program ensures the skilled workforce is ready to match the technology.

Already attracting strong interest, the course’s first intake begins at the end of August, with 30 technicians from across Australia enrolled. It’s a game-changer not just for participants, but for the wider industry, creating a pathway to jobs of the future and supporting the transition to zero-emissions transport.

The program is a shining example of industry and education working hand-in-hand to solve real-world challenges. It places Victoria – and Australia – at the forefront of the clean transport revolution, giving technicians the tools to keep the country moving towards a more sustainable, high-tech future.

At today’s launch, I was reminded of my involvement at this project’s inception. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the collective efforts of the Kangan and Foton teams come to life. The presence of 19 TAFE trainers from across the country highlights why the Heavy Vehicle Industry is so remarkable – and proves that, together, we can create a strong path forward,” said Michael Rose, National Manager of Skills, Training and Workforce Development.
