HVIA is partnering with South Metropolitan TAFE to host an Industry Information Session aimed at gaining deeper insights into Western Australia’s automotive manufacturing sector and advocating for its inclusion in the State’s ‘Lower Fees, Local Skills’ program.
This ‘Lower Fees, Local Skills’ program significantly reduces course fees for eligible qualifications – some by up to 72 per cent – to help build a skilled local workforce.
However, automotive manufacturing is notably absent from the list of eligible qualifications. Given that a large number of trailers are built in Australia and HVIA members play a crucial role in supporting the mining industry, HVIA believes this exclusion is a missed opportunity for both businesses and future professionals.
With backing from South Metropolitan TAFE, the exclusive Industry Information Session will provide HVIA members with a valuable opportunity to connect, discuss industry challenges and explore how training programs can better align with workforce needs. It will also include a tour of the facilities at the institution’s Thornlie campus. Specifically, the session will allow attendees to:
> Engage in industry discussions on current trends and challenges;
> Network with key stakeholders, including leaders from HVIA, the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance, the Resources Industry Training Council and South Metropolitan TAFE;
> Share insights on the industry’s unique challenges and explore collaborative solutions; and
> Learn about apprenticeship training programs and how they can better support industry growth.
HVIA’s National Manager – Skills, Training and Workforce Development, Michael Rose, says the initiative is a critical step in strengthening WA’s heavy automotive manufacturing sector.
“HVIA members don’t just build equipment—they drive Australia’s mining and transport industries forward,” he says.
“With the Federal Government committing $350 million towards fee-free university-ready courses to boost skills in clean energy, construction and manufacturing, now is the time to push for automotive manufacturing’s inclusion in the ‘Lower Fees, Local Skills’ program.
“It’s a simple yet vital step toward securing the future of Australian automotive manufacturing.”
