HVIA Members Bring STEM To Life

Some 739 students from 19 schools got up close with the heavy vehicle industry at CSIRO’s #WithSTEMYouCan Careers Expo in Western Sydney on August 5, with HVIA members Team Global Express, Daimler Truck and Air Brake Corporation on hand to showcase the sector’s STEM credentials.

A standout moment came each time Daimler Truck Australia Pacific’s Kevin Youngman tilted the cab of an all-electric Fuso – part of Team Global Express’s world-first ARENA funded 60-truck electric fleet rollout, drawing gasps from a crowd getting their first real exposure to the industry that keeps Australia moving.

Students also explored HVIA’s “STEM That Moves The Real World” display, covering everything from EV fleet transition and telematics to logistics and driver-safety technology.

Representing HVIA on the day were Summer Steward and Gordon Liu (Team Global Express), Allysa Allocco (Air Brake Corporation) and Kevin Youngman (Daimler Truck Australia Pacific).

The team were each able to draw on their own paths to inspire the next generation to consider the diverse and meaningful opportunities available across our sector.

As Summer put it: “Be curious, back yourself, and just have a crack. The transport industry is changing fast, and there has never been a better time to be part of it.”

The CSIRO reported a “fantastic buzz in the rooms throughout the day.”

“This is something we definitely have to do more of, right around the country,” says HVIA’s Steve Power, flagging plans to bring the initiative to The Depot at the 2027 Brisbane Truck Show as part of Truck Week.
