Have Your Say on Workforce Planning

HVIA members are urged to provide feedback on the annual workforce plans being released by Jobs and Skills Councils set up by the Federal Government to provide industry with a stronger, more strategic voice in ensuring Australia’s VET sector delivers better outcomes for learners and employers.

The Mining and Automotive Jobs and Skills Council (AUSMASA) is currently seeking feedback on its 2025 workforce plan which, concerningly, barely mentions the heavy vehicle manufacturing and repair sector. The closest reference is to heavy electric trucks in mining—hardly a comprehensive reflection of our industry’s scope, expertise or critical workforce needs.

AUSMASA recently conducted a consultation roadshow in Victoria, raising key questions that demand HVIA members’ input, including:

  • Are our qualifications keeping pace? What updates are needed to match new technologies and industry trends? Are there new qualifications that should be introduced?
  • What skills are we missing? Are there gaps in your team that, if filled, would make a significant impact? Pay special attention to restricted licences that may be required.
  • Can we leverage skills from other industries? Are there training or qualifications from other sectors that could benefit ours?
  • How do we tackle skill shortages? What strategies are proving effective in attracting and retaining talent?
  • What’s on the horizon? What major disruptors could reshape our workforce in the coming years, and how should AUSMASA and the industry prepare?

HVIA will be making multiple submissions to the consultation process through direct communication and via the Learning and Development Committee.

But individual voices matter, so HVIA urges every member to visit the AUSMASA website and make their views heard.

Additionally, feedback from the consultation roadshow can be submitted here.
