On December 3, 2024, industry stakeholders gathered at HVIA’s headquarters to discuss the Bus, Truck and Trailer Manufacturing Apprenticeship.
Participants identified limited awareness and sporadic employer engagement as key barriers to uptake. Despite a strong apprenticeship framework, many employers rely on in-house training rather than formal qualifications.
Key takeaways included:
> TAFE Queensland is the sole provider of this diverse qualification, offering fabrication, electronics and composite materials training.
> Actions Ahead: Increased promotional efforts via video content and engagement with schools to showcase the program’s value.
> Industry Appeal: Apprenticeships can provide businesses with skilled labour and access to incentives, making them a sound investment for the future workforce.
A Pathway To Skilled Careers
The AUM30218 Certificate III in Automotive Manufacturing Technical Operations equips apprentices with advanced skills in fabrication, mechanics and electrical systems tailored to the bus, truck, and trailer industries.
Delivered by TAFE Queensland SkillsTech, this program has more than 130 active apprentices with employers ranging from small family businesses to large corporations.
Program highlights include:
> Diverse skillsets including welding, chassis modification, and composite repairs.
> Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) options and incentives for employers.
> Accreditation opportunities through Queensland Transport for industry-recognized certifications.
Challenges remain in promoting the program and addressing geographic and awareness barriers. Tailored training options and testimonials underscore the program’s value in addressing industry skill gaps.
