National Automated Access System Webinar

On July 9 HVIA will host a webinar in conjunction with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to demonstrate the progress so far on the National Automated Access System (NAAS).

Recently HVIA caught up with TMR to go over the NAAS. Currently, one of the main issues operators face with the Performance Based Standards (PBS) Scheme is the excessive administration and red tape required to apply for access permits for both state and local roads. Significant cost, time and management is spent by operators, just making sure heavy combinations can be on the roads each week and complete their planned routes.

The automation of the NAAS portal will reduce the regulatory and compliance cost burden for road managers, allowing a more automated, predictable and consistent process for permit or route approvals. It will also simplify and minimise the administration for operators applying for access with the ability to remember pass routes and applications, reducing unnecessary data re-entry for repeat jobs.

The NAAS will initially include state-controlled roads, with road networks managed by local governments and other road managers to be integrated into the NAAS as part of a staged process.

The NAAS was modelled off the successful Tasmanian Heavy Vehicle Access Management System (HVAMS) and development was approved to go ahead in July 2023. Already the NAAS is up and running in Tasmania for several applications, and for limited applications in Queensland such as Australian Defence Force (ADF) Oversize-Overmass (OSOM) vehicles.

The upcoming webinar will allow TMR to provide key industry stakeholders with a progress update on the project and also receive early feedback and concerns which can be considered by TMR in its rollout of the NAAS.
