Hydrogen Refuelling Network A Step Closer

New Zealand-based green hydrogen technology developer and producer Hiringa Energy is one step closer to bringing a green hydrogen refuelling network to Australia.

The heavy transport decarbonisation specialist was recently awarded a $788,000 grant from the NSW Government to progress Australia’s first green hydrogen refuelling corridor.

Hiringa have already successfully rolled out a green hydrogen refuelling network in New Zealand, which has avoided the emission of thousands of tonnes of carbon from freight transport operations since its opening in 2024.

The $788,000 grant was awarded to Hiringa under the NSW Government’s Net Zero Manufacturing Initiative, and will be used to select appropriate refuelling technology, secure approvals for infrastructure works, and identify the network’s future customers.

Importantly, the network will be designed specifically for the needs of heavy freight transport vehicles, enabling emission-free hydrogen freight transport between Sydney and Brisbane via three sites along the Pacific Highway.

Hiringa expects the initial three sites to be online in 2028, and has plans for another seven refuelling sites by 2030, to connect major freight corridors between Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and the inner NSW agricultural regions.

“This network will give transporters the opportunity to offer their customers decarbonised freight without impacting their productivity. Green hydrogen is well suited to heavy transport needs: it has ultra-fast refuelling times and hydrogen vehicles have a similar capacity to diesel equivalents,” Hiringa Head of New Business, Ryan McDonald, says.

“It means operators get the emissions down while keeping their productivity up.”

Additionally, Hiringa’s strategic relationships will offer unique avenues for freight owners to decarbonise.

Its partnership with Ofload will allow the digital supply chain solutions provider’s customers to have the opportunity to fully or partially offset their transport emissions.

In addition, Hiringa’s relationship with truck leasing and rental company TR Group will enable TR to offer fully maintained leases on all hydrogen-powered trucks.

Hiringa, Ofload and TR Group will all present in technical sessions at TruckShowX 2026, HVIA’s biennial trucking technology and decarbonisation conference and expo to be held on May 18-19 in the New South Wales Hunter Valley. Information, tickets, and accommodation all available here.
