The HVIA Learning & Development Committee – comprising human resource and training representatives from HVIA members – met online on January 20, 2026 to progress key workforce and training priorities for the industry.
Committee members discussed priority skill areas including supervisor and leadership capability, apprentice support, safety and wellbeing in modern workshops, regulatory and compliance readiness, knowledge transfer from an ageing workforce, and the need for accessible training for workers with varying literacy, numeracy and digital confidence.
The Committee also heard from Queensland Department of Trade, Employment and Training representatives, who shared insights from recent research into apprentice retention across light and heavy vehicle trades.
The findings reinforced that apprentices stay where supervision is strong, workplace culture is positive and expectations are clear – with structured supervision identified as the most critical factor influencing completion.
Members also discussed opportunities to expand mentoring beyond first-year apprentices, increase exposure to emerging technologies and explore targeted micro-credentials – including guidance on the practical use of AI tools in training and supervision.
The LDC Committee will meet quarterly throughout 2026 and play a central role in driving the industry’s skilling agenda. HVIA members can express an interest in being involved in the Committee by contacting Aaron Johnstone at a.johnstone@hvia.asn.au.
