Joshua McNicol from Tefco was a crowd favourite, taking out the Vehicle Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year award (sponsored by Wurth) at the 2025 HVIA National Awards.
Judges were blown away by Josh’s passion for the job. “Josh notes that taking pride in his fabrication work is important to him. I have often found that pride in one’s craft is a common denominator among high achievers,” one judge said.
Another judge said, “To be skilled enough as an apprentice to be on track to finish early is a great accomplishment.”
These two qualities stood out across many of the finalists, and it was a breath of fresh air to see so much mastery of craft happening in the heavy vehicle industry.
Josh has a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade, more commonly known as boiler making or welding. His employer, Tefco Trailers, said “his ability to interpret engineering drawings, execute precision welds and problem-solve in a high-paced production environment sets him apart from his peers.”
In his application, there was extensive evidence of many types of welds and fabrications that Josh has put his hands to.
The submission noted that his supervisors regularly trust him with challenging builds due to his accuracy, critical thinking and consistent output.
When asked about future goals, Josh expressed a keenness to understand every aspect of his work – from design decisions to electrical systems and hydraulics. He strives to deliver high-quality results and be a well-rounded tradesperson.
Josh has high work ethic, delivers his work on time and is well trusted by his team members.
It was heartwarming to hear such positive and bright commentary around all the apprentices nominated for these awards. Apprentices are so critical to our industry and ensuring we have the skills base and continued capability for manufacturing in Australia for a long time to come.
