NTC Forum Delivers Update On Transport Reforms

HVIA’s Adele Lausberg this week attended the National Transport Commission (NTC) Industry Forum, which focused on the theme ‘Delivering future-ready transport reform’.

The NTC is responsible for delivering the reform priorities of Australia’s infrastructure and transport ministers. The reintroduction of NTC’s Industry Forum provided an opportunity for industry to pass on insights into the Commission’s work program and communicate emerging issues and positions.

Keynote speaker Helen Rowe (pictured above), Transport Program Impact Manager at the Climateworks Centre, who also spoke at TruckShowX 2024, delivered a presentation about the journey to net zero for transport. She outlined different emissions models and the uptake of low- and net-zero vehicles that is needed to achieve this target.

Marion Terrell, independent transport expert, spoke about productivity in transport, emphasising the potential of driverless vehicles. She also spoke about optimising road maintenance as opposed to simply adding new roads to the network.

A panel session discussed the role of data in safety improvements, the importance of a flexible and adaptive future workforce, and the challenges of adopting new technologies in a strict regulatory environment.

NTC executives provided an update on Heavy Vehicle National Law Reform, improving health screening for heavy vehicle drivers, Australian Dangerous Goods Code Review and the Automated Vehicle Program.

The NTC’s Corporate Plan contains further information on the NTC’s work program and can be found here.

Members that are interested in hearing more about the work program and NTC projects relevant to the heavy vehicle sector are encouraged to register for HVIA’s Online Forum on October 31. Register here.
