Higher Axle Mass Limits For Euro VI HV’s Now In Force

The next step in achieving the crucial additional axle mass allowances for Euro VI heavy vehicles is complete, with the recent release of the Heavy Vehicle (Mass, Dimension and Loading) National Amendment Regulation 2024.

The amending regulation, which can be accessed online here, allow an additional 0.5 tonnes for ‘complying’ single-steer and twin-steer axle vehicles, which move to seven tonnes and 11.5 tonnes, respectively, with some conditions.

To be eligible to operate at increased steer axle masses, single-steer axle vehicles must:

  • Have a GVM of 15 tonne or greater;
  • Comply with the requirements of ADR 80/04 (i.e. Euro VI emissions standards);
  • Be fitted with steer tyres with section widths of at least 315mm;
  • Have a front underrun protection device that complies with UN ECE Regulation No. 93 or ADR 84/04;
  • Have a cabin that complies with UN ECE Regulation No. 29; and
  • Have appropriately rated tyres, axle and suspension for a seven-tonne load on the steer axle.

Scania is best known for thumping V8 engines , but the Swedish manufacturer’s latest range of Euro 6 engines is also incredibly clean as it aims to extend the life of its diesel trucks – and that mighty V8

To be eligible to operate at increased steer axle masses, twin-steer axle vehicles must:

  • Comply with the requirements of ADR 80/04 (i.e. Euro VI emissions standards);
  • Be fitted with tyres with section widths of at least 275mm;
  • Have a load-sharing suspension system for the axle group; and
  • Have appropriately rated tyres, axles and suspension for a 11.5-tonne load on the axle group.

The amendments will commence from November 1, 2024 to align with the ‘new models’ date of ADR 80/04.
