WA Government Looks To Expand Vehicle Repairers Scheme To Cover Electric Vehicles

The WA Government has a Motor Vehicle Repairers Act 2003 which requires businesses undertaking motor vehicle repairs to be licensed. The Act does not currently cover work on high voltage systems in electric vehicles.

The WA Government is contemplating extending the Act to encompass work on these systems and has approached HVIA as a key industry stakeholder for feedback on a discussion paper which ask for feedback on:

• The scope of work that should be included within the provisions of the Act
• The qualifications that should be required to undertake this work
• Determining the extent of demand for this work
• Upskilling and transition requirements
• Safety Training
• Requirements relating to hydrogen and alternative fuels

The consultation is being run through the consumer protection division of the Department of Energy, Mines, Industrial Regulation and Safety and will be used to develop options for further consultation with industry.

The discussion is largely focussed on the qualifications developed under the Australian Skills Quality Authority’s Automotive Electric Vehicle Technology Framework which is consistent with previous work by HVIA with the TAFE system.

HVIA has been asked to provide feedback on the discussion paper to WA Government by 11 October 2024.
